Proponents of Heathrow expansion point to the impressive safety record of air transport and argue that the odds of an aircraft falling out of the sky on a populated area are infinitesimal. Except that, on a January morning less than 5 years ago, West London came within a hair's breadth of that happening. If flight BA038 had lost its engines just 60 seconds earlier, then instead of scraping over the airport fence it would have come down on central Hounslow, with the likely loss of all on board and potentially many fatalities on the ground. Happily, the gods were smiling that day, otherwise the subject of Heathrow expansion would not now be on even the bravest politician's agenda. |
