Its interesting that the pro R3 posters seem to be the rudest, and dont bother to post any arguments. I was well aware of LHR when I moved to Chiswick, I also read at length the findings of the last major public inquiry (T5) which imposed a cap on total flight movements and made it clear that no further expansion of the airport should be considered, for a range of reasons including noise, pollution, congestion. I also noted the undertaking of BAA to accept these conclusions. Now it is clear that BAA will never be satisfied. I would welcome an honest debate about the pros and cons of expansion. But lets be honest about the cons, and they are very real. They can also be quantified in broad economic terms, or ignored (as to date they have tended to be). The pros also tend never to be clarified. A Spanish owned company that makes most of its money through retail rentals is not the best placed to tell us what is best for the UK. Nor indeed are BA and Virgin, their interest is maximising their share price. The question we need to ask is a simple one. Is the current site of LHR, where nearly all arrivals fly over central London and densely population areas, where public transport links are pretty poor compared to other global airports, really the best place to build the BIGGEST airport in the world, which is what LHR will become with R3. I don't want LHR to disappear, but I think its big enough as it is. THats my view. I realise some people have others, but I don't see the need to insult them for having them. |
