"They just hired Joseph Bazalgette to build them a nice new one, capable of dealing with the traffic demands of the day." Except he didn't build a nice new one. He built new towers on the old piers of the previous bridge. It was even then something of a botch job. Cost has always been a prime consideration for Thames bridges. The original Hammersmith Bridge was tolled when it was first built. As for closing river crossings to road traffic, but keeping the bridge, there are hundreds of examples, including the original Iron Bridge across the Severn! Should that be knocked down too? |
