"That's something like 1800 buses crossings daily carrying thousands of people." Just over 800 buses used to cross the bridge just before the closure. It used to be more than double that fifteen years ago. Who was wringing their hands over the loss of buses then? In fact thousands of people a day still take the buses up to Hammersmith Bridge and then walk over. The issue is the much smaller number that can't make that walk. There are viable options that could help them now, even given the current weight restrictions of a bridge never designed for heavy traffic. What's "short sighted and very selfish" is refusing to implement such options in order to avoid eroding the case for reopening the bridge to motor traffic. |
