The real World. This morning I took ride to Hammersmith Bridge, dismounted and crossed then walked down to the nearest bus stop which is some distance from the bridge itself. As I arrived just after ten a bus, coming from Roehampton, disembarked about 25 passengers . I followed them all of which crossed the bridge. The time taken to the nearest bus stop (the 72 going to East Acton) was 11 minutes. To get to a stop going the other direction took a further 5 minutes.. To reach the Underground add 4 more. In total 20 minutes. Prior to closure buses went direct over the to Hammersmith bus/ Underground Station. Time taken can only be estimated at eight minutes.(in the dry and relative comfort) Go figure which is better, a dedicated cycle path or a fully functioning bus service? PS The disputed number of bus crossings don't really matter its more the future potential numbers that need to be thought about. however I would like to make a final comment on that. Who best to ask about the numbers? The DfT, LBHF or TfL? Here's the clue. TfL stands for Transport for London. This organisation and its subsidiaries are responsible for most of London's bus services the other two are not. |
