The reason Hammersmith Bridge is closed to traffic is that there is no compelling reason to reopen to motor vehicles given the huge costs and the highly questionable benefit. You might instead want to characterise this as the "only reason", but if nobody is willing to cough up while professing that they want it open, it amounts to the same thing. No change in government is going to shift the underlying considerations. We'll see what comes out of the borings into the foundations - there seems to be no hurry to get these analysed. I wouldn't be surprised if it's found that 200-year-old timber underpinnings are not fit to bear the weight of a bridge that can safely carry motor vehicles. |
