Regardless of views on its role, the story of CS9 through Chiswick is one of farce and mismanagement. A pointless and rushed 'temporary' scheme that involved an awful lot of permanent looking works. Then its obvious flaws needed lots more digging and construction. A couple of years on we still dont have a fully open scheme, and also are still getting a slimmed down version on the cheap, unlike the rest of CS9 route across west London, which creates lots of pinch points and potential blockages which further add to the congestion in W4. Why W4 deserves the cheap scheme and the rest of LBH and LBHF get the full scheme does not even seem to be a question. We have lost a key westbound stretch of bus lane past the bus garage, and the new narrow carriageway for the right turn up Goldhawk from King St just another narrow pinch point that will create more delays for buses and other traffic, to add to all those through central Chiswick. North-south traffic (trade, local and commuter) is funnelled onto fewer routes, all of which have seen capacity cut. Chiswick Lane northbound now one lane not two, TGT hard to get to given the above constraints, Fishers Lane closed, bus gate that cuts eastbound capacity on the High Road before Acton Lane. No coherent planning or oversight. Whatever the proponents say, CS9 does nothing to stop the daily flows of traffic to and from the M4/ A4 and north circular through W4 in both the morning and evening peaks, which are the main source of congestion and pollution in the area. What it does is increase the vulnerability of the local road network to gridlock. |
