My understanding was that the taxonomy of data fields available to SatNav companies included more detail than the simple A, B, C or unclassified designations. This gives an input into the algorithms than can discourage traffic from certain roads - for instance if it is deemed primarily residential then it is less likely to be chosen as a route but may be if there is congestion elsewhere. Although routes taken by other vehicles does play a part in how Waze or Google Maps directs you, I think this is only one of the factors. Mine no longer directs me down Fishers Lane even though plenty of vehicles still use it. |
