The only road classification under control of local authorities is if the roads are labelled as 'A', or "B' and everything else is unclassified. The SatNav routing algorithms don't have any inherent preference for A roads otherwise they wouldn't have sent cars along the unclassified Hartington Rd instead of the A316 and A4. Under this system, an unclassified road is still suitable for an HGV unless there is specific signage to ban an HGV (based upon weight, length etc.) A warning sign also means the road can be used by an HGV, it just means watch-out, take care, be aware. The routing algorithms also don't calculate dozens of different combinations before providing the route. The algorithms essentially work on the basis of "this vehicle wants to go between X and Y, I've recorded other vehicles going between X and Y using this route so I'll provide the same route". That's why Google Maps persisted in sending vehicles along routes with 'No Entry Motor Vehicles' restrictions. It saw vehicles were driving through these signs so it just served up the same routes. |
