Like many others leaving a small town to go to a big city university in the 1970s was an eye opener. But probably the most heart warming thing was to return to my very ordinary home locality and see with fresh eyes how gay men and women had been integrated into the community long before 1967. Gay men were well represented in the local volunteer fire brigade and I remember an openly gay female couple who were near neighbours. This offended no one, apart from my grandmother, who thought that they paid my grandfather rather rather too much attention. I understand why some gay people would wish to have their own pubs and clubs but my instinct would always be to encourage integration and tolerance. I do sometimes wonder where all the gay students were at my secondary school. There was certainly no one who was obviously "out". It must have been hard for them.Times have changed thank goodness. |
