I think that the issue is one of having a safe space in which to explore one's sexuality - as well as accepting people who are different. If we give into the idea that trans-sexuality is a 'disorder' then it's a short step away from adding gay sexuality to that and then who knows what (Where will it all end?"). This is a path that we have just been on and I fear that we could very easily go backwards on. If we are uncomfortable then let's discuss that but it's a problem that the original poster has and needs to own from their own story / experiences. I am not so perfect that I would point to someone else and say "You have a disorder" - I would ask "What has happened or what has been done to you?" and from there understand their world. Remember AIDS in the 80s? Watch Channel 4's 'It's a sin' or look through my AIDS Archive below to see just how bad things could get again. It's a balance between being all together in one community (integration & commonality) and having a safe space with people who understand and/or accept (diversity). |
