There are some reasons to care about this issue in general. Teenagers, especially if they are autistic or come from difficult backgrounds (perhaps involving abuse) often suffer discomfort about their identity. That's as old as the hills. This can then manifest in various ways. One trend right now is for troubled teenagers to latch on to the idea that their gender is different from their sex. If treated with the strategy to neither encourage nor discourage, but watch-and-wait, many will grow out of this idea. However, there is a strong lobby that encourages them to undertake irreversible medical treatments that leave them sterile, long before they are old enough to make sensible decisions about such life-changing decisions, and without sufficient counseling. There are now lots of examples of people regretting this later, and attempting to go back (what's called detransitioning). Type "detransitioning" into youtube and watch some of the videos, that have titles like "I regret transitioning and so will you". It's a bit heart-breaking to hear young people say "why didn't someone tell me I was being rash". Maybe transitioning is ultimately right for some people, and there are also youtube videos by people who say it's made them much happier. But a huge amount of care is required around the issue. Anyone who thinks it is a simple issue is completely wrong. |
