"wrong to be judgemental about such personal choices" Choice has nothing to do with it. One does not choose to be gay, trans, bi or straight. The choice has to do with how you express yourself and to what degree you live openly and honestly and to what length you will or must go to do so. My coming out was a process. But it was also one that was fairly instantaneous the moment I found it in myself to express it. And then it was pretty much over. With trans people hopefully they, too, will have an epiphany and they will make it known who they are. But for them, it is a far longer process involving many professionals over a period of time to help see them through. In a sense, they are forced down that path. They are scrutinized at every turn in a way I never "had" to be. And despite what we've seen here that they should be regarded as mentally challenged in some way they will often still find a way to flip a bird in the face of such adversity and soldier on. That perseverance simply astounds me. So again, brave and fierce. With each life lived openly I hope it becomes easier for those who follow. But I can tell you this: we've had parents come to us asking if we can help them and their kids with their paths. And it breaks my heart parents younger than I still struggle and ask the same naive questions as if time has stood still. |
