In the early 70's I worked for the Daily Mail just off Fleet Street and I struck up a close friendship with a handsome, intelligent male colleague, anyway long story short, one day we were going out for lunch and Iain said he had something important to tell me which was he was gay. We had linked arms my immediate reaction was to move away, but Iain said please dont do that "I'm still the same person and we are are good friends". He was right and we remained good friends until he passed away 5 years ago. He did not choose to be gay quite simply it was how he was, but outwardly for expediency and to avoid prejudice he was a ladies man. He chose to live his life as openly and honestly as he could in those judgemental times, which were completely different from how they are today. Well said David x |
