| Hi Tom, Can I suggest you take note of first-hand reports from traders rather than make assumptions such as about Giovanni's which you cite as having expanded as a result of the mini-Holland scheme. As was reported earlier in this stream, your assertion was based on fantasy. This is what Gianluca, who owns Giovanni, said in response to a request from David Lesniak (please check above): Hi David, Sure, happy to help. Our expansion had absolutely nothing to do with the cycling lane. We planned our expansion before the cycling lane was introduced. Could you let me know where/who posted this about our expansion. If anything, the cycling lane has damaged business due to the reduced parking on the high road. In addition, there was a free car park near the restaurant but they have now made this pay and display because of the cycling lane. To top this all off I have hardly seen anyone use the cycling lane. I know from my experience working with traders in Chiswick that new openings do not indicate business success. They indicate new openings. Surely that's a fact any academic would acknowledge. A judgement on success must be made on business survival rates. Several businesses have opened, spent a huge amount of money setting up, then shut. Unfortunately, traders coming in from outside Chiswick believe the PR hype about footfall promulgated in premises details to encourage traders in. Local businesses know the truth is different from the hype. It proves to be not enough to sustain the business. There are plenty of examples in Chiswick. And this is despite having a Waitrose, your bellwether of a thriving high street! You also talk of shop closures, choosing to focus only on one section of the mini-Holland scheme - Green Lanes - ignoring Palmers Green and Winchmore Hill along which the mini-Holland scheme runs. There are statistics and there are statistics. I saw more than one closed shop when I visited Palmers Green, Green Lanes and Winchmore Hill. Footfall will inevitably decrease along the south side of Chiswick High Road if CS9 is rammed through pavement right in front of our shops, stealing walking space. Many of our independents are on the south side. I don't want to see them close because of the wishes of a tiny minority of people, many of whom don't live or work in Chiswick and will be passing through, as they do now. The pavement is no place for a cycle superhighway (whatever its new name, that is what it is). The pavement is the place for pedestrians. The fight should not be walking v cycling. I consider Will Norman to have failed in his role as Walking and Cycling Commissioner as he is actively ignoring half of his role, favouring the other here in Chiswick. In my view, anyone who supports CS9 on pavement is anti-pedestrian. Yet walking is active travel! We want safe cycling in Chiswick so residents, and visitors, can reach the High Road safely as well as travel along it safely. We don't want TfL's madcap linear scheme in a town that is far from linear. It will destroy our retail and leisure economy which is a significant factor in Chiswick's desirability as a destination for visitors (whose spending power we welcome) and as a place to live, work and spend leisure time. As for congestion, loss of trees, loss of parking, loss of loading bays, failure to address air quality, numerous junctions creating a frustrating stop-start journey for cyclists and the very important safety risks posed by having to cross a confusing one-track two-way channel ... it's a triumph of fanatical dogma over common sense. |
