| While I wholeheartedly endorse your point on how enjoyable a game of rugby can be at local amateur clubs, Andrew is right to highlight that this should be translating into international success but it is not. A key weakness of a lot of these clubs is the lack of emphasis on developing new talent and boosting grassroots participation. Rosslyn Park try but, as yet this hasn't yielded much in terms of results. The players at the clubs tend to be ones who were quite good at school and privately educated. Contrast this with a French amateur club like Massy where the focus is overwhelmingly on bringing in and developing new talent particularly players who don't have a background in the game. While it is understandable that some clubs want to turn their back on professionalisation, the cold hard fact is that the international game has not. A chummy atmosphere at matches makes for a pleasant day out but is totally disconnected from elite level sport. |
