| Sweeney's policy of rebuilding the depth of the domestic league seems to have been given greater urgency by the poor performance of English teams in the Champions Cup, Northampton excepted. It looks like he has decided that he wants to get back closer to the 14 teams of the French league. However, he wants them financially sustainable and with their own grounds. That indicates that the fast track might be available to Wasps and Worcester but not for London Irish who don't seem to have any credible plans for their own ground. Perhaps a ground share on a interim basis might be considered but, as you say, we should be hearing something by now if 2026 is the target. The reasoning behind building a league made up of club's with their own grounds makes sense however many of the French teams benefit from local government support in which they get preferential access to municipal stadiums. That means that the French league can support a higher salary cap that the English one. |
