Thanks, Adam. Whilst I obviously support the keeping of the panels, I understand the views of those against them – I too don’t like to see buildings that I consider to be out of keeping with the surroundings. Sometimes, it seems to be more about architects’ egos more than anything else; but, equally, I don’t think we should be afraid to move on where ‘appropriate’, which, as you say, is subjective. I guess we’re lucky that glass was invented during the bronze age, otherwise we wouldn’t be allowed to fit windows either, which, visually, are not dissimilar to solar panels. My next door neighbour wanted solar panels in her sloping slate roof, as part of a loft conversion. LBH refused permission initially, yet only people flying over in aeroplanes would really notice them. I think LBH gave way in the end due to evidence she presented (some government paper encouraging them, I think) but they didn’t get fitted, probably for cost reasons. We do seem to be a bit slow in accepting that new ideas and change are sometimes necessary. |
