Why are solar panels so much more of an “eyesore”, in your view, than new brick walls (cf the new houses for sale in Chiswick Mall which got planning permission). Our panels are all on brick walls erected after 1945. We all have to adapt to the changing world and, for our grandchildren's sake, take urgent action to reduce carbon emissions. The panels face SSW to get maximum sun. They can anyway only be seen from the other side of the road by those looking up. Most people don’t even notice the panels – they are looking at the river as they walk towards it or at the cars flashing past if they are coming back up towards the A4. The panels face a factory warehouse in a part of the street with no other houses in it. There are Motorway-style lights and traffic signs that would not be in a Conservation Area if the street did not lead down to the river. The Council allows huge polluting continental lorries and coaches to drive up and park by the Brewery, although they could easily be diverted. Ofgem warned last month that we will be facing power cuts by 2015 if we do not act fast to increase renewable energy generation. Only 3% of UK energy comes from renewable sources at present – by far the lowest of any major country in the EU. The Government has committed to reach 15% by 2020 but few people believe it possible. We all need to wake up and face a future of increasingly scarce and expensive electricity. |
