David - my lack of a ringing endorsement for the Prime Minister derives from my caution in predicting long term outcomes given the unstable and unbelievably complex nature of the problems that we and our European colleagues are facing. Simple solutions cannot in the long run solve the problems of the Euro or equally "protect the City of London". We now know that there is no silver bullet or big bazooka. The PM had little option but to make the decision that he did and Mr Clegg should have shown some spine and supported him wholeheartedly (and not just for half a day). However, as us old party hacks remember it was the Lib-Dems who campaigned long and hard for the UK to enter the Euro and surrender all control over our fiscal and montetary policies. So probably not surprising to see "Our Nick" reverting to type. Goodness - don't these "progressive" Lib-Dem policies look stupid and naive now. There is no doubt about it - in this case the Daily Express and Daily Telegraph readers were right and the The Guardian and the FT (at least some of its journalists) were wrong. I am sure that the PM was motivated by the best of patriotic intentions and was not driven as some cynics have suggested by a desire to stay "in" with the Eurosceptics in his party. Incidentally these are the same cynics who claim that he is happy to be unable to pursue a full blooded Conservative agenda because of the need to stay in with his Lib-Dem "pals". Surely they cannot have it both ways. |
