Will and Ann, I don't read the Daily Express but I do read The Times, The Irsh Times, The Independent and the Economist. I am Irish not British. That is why I find it particularly ironic that the present Irish Government - several of whose members I know personally- last Friday agreed to subordinate the Government of Ireland to the unelected Euriopean Commission 3 days after the 90th Anniversary of the signature of the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 6th December 1921. That Treaty in the words of General Michael Collins gave Ireland "the freedom to achieve freedom". The recent EU Treaties and the new Treaty or Treaties that are bound to arise from the Merkozy proposals on the contrary will make Ireland and any other state that agrees to the Merkozy proposals subordinate to the unelected European Commission, the ECB, the European Court of Justice and any other EU or Eurozone institutions that are remoselessly taking power away from elected Governments and elected Parliaments. The democratic deficit in the EU is in many respects as serious the financial deficits incurred by many EU members states. The Greeks are not taking kindly to the unelected regime imposed on them by the EU. The italians won't be happy either when Dottore Monti starts to bite. It |
