David Giles said "most if (sic) the British I know who live in France are just as eurosceptic as the majority of British people I know here." You see this is part of the problem. Eurosceptics think everyone is like them because they circulate with others of like minds. I remember London Labour supporters believing they couldn't lose the 92 election until they went for a weekend in the country during the campaign and discovered differently. The fact is that even if the majority of people are euro sceptic it doesn't matter. Poll after poll shows that Europe is not important to people (unless you are a right wing Tory). It is way behind the economy, health, public serviuces, tax etc. A YouGov poll today showed that the effect of Cameron's veto is to reduce the proportion of people that now want to leave the EU. So now is not the time for the Tory right to push for a referendum on membership. |
