The EU is indeed a shanbles and David Cameron was right to keep us out of any further or deeper involvement in yet another scheme to prop up the euro by political means. However the markets and not the politicians will determine the fate of the euro. David Cameron's position on this issue is clear, realistic and in the national interest. Nick Clegg supported David Cameron on Friday but, following the intervention of his EuroFederalist LibDem and European Movement colleagues, he changed tack on Sunday and criticised David Cameron for putting the long-term British national interest before the short-term of proping up Merkozy and the euro. Nick Clegg is plainly not someone who can be trusted. Ed Milliband, as usual, lacks any coherent or principled position. He is turning out to be the most ineffectual Labour leader since Michael Foot. But Michael Foot had principles. Milliband only has sound bites. |
