in 1935 as the storm crowds were gathering over Europe: "I would close every recruiting station, disband the Army and disarm the Air Force. I would abolish the whole dreadful equipment of war and say to the world: "Do your worst." He then went off to visit his fellow socialists Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini in a vain quest to stop the Second World War. At least he was a man of principle not like the charlatans and opportunists who now lead the Labour Party. Labour simply has nothing sensible to say about the present eurozone crisis except to say Britain should get more deeply involved in it. There does not seem to be a single front-bench Labour MP who understands simple economics and market forces. David Cameron has quite simply taken a semi-detached attitude echoing the policies on Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher which were to be in Europe but not ruled by Europe. When, like the Titanic, the euro and the eurozone are sinking it is better not to sail in them than to try to rearrange the deckchairs or scramble for the inadequate lifeboats. The euro is a failed political currency. It cannot be saved by politicans like Merkozy. It will be destroyed by the immense debts of the euro zone and by market forces. |
