Like Colin I think that it is too early to tell whether or not Dave has made the right decision. However it has clearly spooked "Nick", and Milleband and Balls are making opportunistic hay while the sun shines with the old "if I wanted to go to Dublin I would start from here" gambit. These responses will not have enhanced their credibility outside a small coterie of diehard supporters. From a purely selfish point of view I wish the Euro and the Eurozone countries well. However if the Euro does unravel over the next few weeks and months the proposed new treaty will surely be a complete irrelevance. It will be every man and women for him and herself. If the Euro survives then as Pres. Sarkozy has said we are (whether we like it or not)in a new Europe and appropriate arrangements will have to be negotiated. I do not think that closer fiscal and monetary union is achievable for the Eurozone in a time frame that will make the slightest difference to the sovereign debt crisis that is at the heart of Europe's current economic woes. |
