I was waiting a while to see if anybody would pick this up before weighing in myself; your decision to do so is welcome as is your refraining from making it a party-political bitch. See my comments below on the situation in response to my occasional sparing partner Alan Brainsby. But having said which, you must surely realise that the real cause of this summary cancellation of such an essential (and as you say decades-delayed) improvement to the existing public transport system is that ALL the serious money is still being ringfenced for the ludiicrous and extravagant Crossrail project - that's the scheme that SHOULD be being cancelled, preferably indefinitely. Could you therefore please forcefully impress on your partty, your government and their joint leader, that their backing for Xrail MUST be withdrawn, and the London Mayor and TfL told firmly that they should concentrate on the meny smaller, less interesting and less glamorous improvements to the EXISTING public transport networks (rail AND bus) necessary to (belatedly) get the BASICS right? - Given your government's, its predecessors' and the civil service's (not least the DfT's) seemingly ineradicable penchant for top-down micro-management surely that's not unreasonable to ask for? |
