I have to say that I entirely agree with Jason Stacey on the issue of Transport for London pulling the plug on the long promised and desperately needed lift at Greenford Station. I understand and appreciate the right of the Mayor of London to set spending priorities and yet am at a total loss to know how to tell long suffering commuters that their fares are going through the roof while their lift has gone out of the window. My parliamentary predecessor,Harry Greenway, campaigned for this as did the MP before him,Bill Molloy, and I should have known better when I got the green light in 2007 but I actually believed that whoever won the London Mayoralty this project would be protected. Our local GLA Member,Richard Barnes, is well aware of the appalling circumstances at Greenford and the near impossibility of getting from the platform to street level with shopping - let alone with a baby buggy or if you have limited mobility. I don't know if it's a good use of time to lobby him but he should be reminded of how much this means locally and I'll be having a brisk word with Mayor Boris Johnson at the earliest opportunity. To add insult to injury the footings for the down escalator and a spare were put in place over fifty years ago and the station is actually being readied for the passenger lift at the moment.Get out of the car and onto the tube? That's fine in theory - but not in Greenford. |
