| It's the failed Conservative policy of privatisation that has caused a lot of problems which are now coming home to roost. For instance re energy: there are lots of different layers of people/companies now involved in privatised energy and not just in the number of different energy companies themselves but in the companies involved in just getting that energy to you - the customer. We need to increase the amount of renewable energy we produce and make more use of that rather than depending on fossil fuels from elsewhere. There are new innovations all the time and our resistance to change can hamper progress in many of these. The privatisation of water has led to the prioritisation of providing dividends to investors rather than prioritising the need to maintain, expand and improve the system as the number of customers increased. If you have not watched Channel 4's films Dirty Business on how this has been investigated by concerned residents of Oxfordshire on the state of their local river you should do: https://www.channel4.com/programmes/dirty-business You should also listen to the BBC programmes Rinsed telling of the reduction of Environment Agency staffing during the period of austerity from 12 people to 5 and how this made it difficult if not impossible to investigate all spills. |
