| Masses more people arrive on visas than arrive "illegally". There always have been and are always going to be people taking risks and arriving irregularly. They have just become much more obvious because checks and restrictions have made it more difficult to fly or come by train or lorry or regular boat. There is always going to be a need to "smash the gangs" because those will change and continue to change. There are efforts being made to do this and some of this is being documented and broadcast. It takes a lot of work and much of this was made harder because we no longer had the access to cross-Europe intelligence - just as we could no longer send people back across the Channel because we had left the EU. New and closer inter-European relationships in particular needed to be forged. Far too many people here in the UK complain about immigration and smuggling of people on the one hand but on the other also aid and abet it generally by knowingly or by feigning ignorance buying the cheap tobacco and alcohol and counterfeit goods and services as well as illegal drugs and employing people who are working here without a right to work... We should all be questioning the provenance and our love of all things "cheap". It isn't and has never been a static tick box solution and situation. There are always going to be slimy snake oil sellers - there always have been - offering to cure all ills but that doesn't mean you should believe them. |
