| Ever-closer union was integral to the Treaty of Rome, the founding document of what would become the EU. Ted Heath took us in without a referendum and most voters had not realised the implications when Harold Wilson called his referendum a couple of years later. The various treaties since were not put to the electorate to vote on, despite Labour promising in their manifesto to do so, so when we finally got to vote it was "now or never" and the EU finally had to realise that they could not keep riding roughshod over the British people ad infinitum. |
