It is a relatively easy time period to research, most things were recorded and still exist, the difficult bit is working out who recorded it and where is it stored now. The council minutes had a lot of clues, but didn’t really have the answers. The reference to Chertsey Road Bridge could be a reference to Chiswick Bridge and I missed or nothing was mentioned about the railway bridge, and although I worked out the reason and the date the name was changed, you would need to go through the correspondence between the Borough Surveyor and the DoT, or the DoT historic records to find out why it wasn’t classified and was reconstructed. The fun bit about looking into this was not only finding out about the Kings, Queens and Dukes that have lived in or visited Chiswick that now give it some of its names. But also finding some of the individuals that lived there when it was built and that rent cost them about 25% of their wages. I know it cost more than £1 to live there now, it is probably a lot more than 25% of peoples wages today as well. |
