To understand the names of the roads, it helps to know some of the history of the A316. Some parts of the A316 are 100+ years old, these roads were joined up in 1933 to make the Great South West Road. The anomalies and changes start at Hogarth roundabout. One side of Chiswick Square was knocked down to connect the roundabout and Burlington Lane, this small section was original called Great Chertsey Road, that bit is now called Burlington lane, not sure when it changed, but you can see it on historic maps. Burlington Lane is a curve rather than a straight road because the Duke of Devonshire moved it, nothing to do with the Great South West Road. I always thought Alexandra Avenue ended at Staveley Road, that is where maps show it ending. Where did you get the info from Bernard, I had a look at the 1933 O/S. It shows Chiswick Bridge, but no roads connect to it on the Chiswick side, there is no Alexandra Avenue or Hogarth roundabout either. The O/S from 1938 shows the Great Chertsey road starting at Staveley Road and ending at Chiswick Bridge. Alexandra Avenue is there but not named on the map. Looking at a modern map it looks like Clifford Avenue now extends to Hartington Road, which really is historically wrong. In the early 1930’s on the other side of the river Clifford Avenue was extended to the bridge, if you look at the road names on a map, you can see that when you go straight on at Clifford Corner you are actually turning right onto the Lower Richmond road. Next is Gas works roundabout, or at least it used to be until they renamed it, I guess that was a historic name not worth saving. After the roundabout is the Lower Mortlake Road, then Richmond Circus. Then Twickenham Road which is listed in the A-Z 5 times (4 of them local and one in E11). And then goes into The Avenue which is listed 43 times. After that you have the Chertsey Road, Great Chertsey Road, Twickenham Road (again) and the Country Way which takes you to the M3. Apart from people doing the knowledge I don’t think anyone has had problems with the names and as the change is extending the name not replacing it I don’t see the problem. If anything I have more of a problem with Clifford Avenue being extended, it should have been shortened and the Great Chertsey road extended to Clifford Corner. As for the bus stop, it could be called Great Chertsey Road, although I think Alexandra Gardens would be a better way to rename the stops. |
