My area of interest is the Sulhamstead Estate and old maps, but I am always fascinated how todays boundaries and roads were formed 100’s sometimes 1000’s of years before they were planned. I found a 1937 map that shows the Gravel & Ballast works, which has a Travelling Crane and a Tramway. It shows an entrance that I think still exists today roughly halfway between Hartington Road and Alexandra Bridge, the site boundary is almost the same boundary as todays playing field except it ended roughly opposite the bus stop. I don’t think the O/S revised the maps in the 20’s or early 30’s so there is no map showing Alexandra Avenue as an entrance to the works. Interestingly though the 1951 revision labels that section Great Chertsey Road, so it looks like it lost the name before. I guess the name being reinstated at a later date explains why maps show Alexandra Avenue ending at Staveley Road. Does anyone know if lost the name for 30+ years before or did the O/S not put it on the map for another reason? |
