| I think your analogy is virtually spot on, but it won't be because I've posted something on a local area forum that'll be read by a couple of hundred people (at most). Like the Poll Tax (that, it can be argued did have an overwhelming mandate, forming as it did part of the Tory manifesto for GE '87, which saw them returned with a thumping majority) people didn't kick off about it until they realised what it was going to cost them, once they did all bets were off. Sound familiar? Mandates are mandates until they're not. The will of the people is neither eternal nor immutable. |
