Maybe they are exaggerating but the cafe owners I have chatted to seem to think this is a big deal. Because I have a dog I often use the outside tables but it looks like some Chiswick cafes will opt for the six month licence to save costs - only having tables outside in Spring and Summer. There are apparently two more eating establishments in Chiswick on the verge of closing with the businesses already in administration and this may be the final straw for them. Mark Talbot seems to think any activity by a local business should be taxed to the maximum degree but licensing isn't meant to be a revenue generator - it is supposed to insure that pavement trading is orderly. Things have really got out of hand if it is contributing to the closure of businesses. |
