On the contrary Carl. For once I couldn't agree more with the LA and quite frankly pavement seating is the most ridiculously cheap seating space any eatery has. The article states it's going up to £66 per square meter = just £6 per square foot. On the High Road an average eatery say Bills will be paying about £120 per square foot for the first 20 foot of their shop so only 1/20th of that rate for their pavement seating. As any prudent eatery knows a pavement licence only lasts a year and its renewal is not guaranteed if circumstances change so should never be counted upon when assessing a site's viability. Placing say just a dozen covers outside and only paying £2kpa for it to the LA should be seen as cream upon cream on top. IMO Hounslow could increase the licence fee 500% on the High Road and it would still be highly additive to a bottom line. I hasten to add that I would not advocate the same in side roads off the High Road such as Devonshire Road, but even there a 25% increase still makes it the most profitable seating space going. |
