Incineration needs 30 year contracts for viability since the incinerators can't be allowed to go out. They need materials with a high calorific value eg paper, card, plastics and textiles to keep them going. There is nothing renewable about energy produced. The goods need to keep on coming. The only form of renewable energy from waste is by anaerobic digestion for food waste which also provides good quality compost. It is the method used by LBH. Incineration avoids landfill tax but there are still gate fees. It isn't free! whereas recyclable goods are sold for reuse. LBH don't as yet use incineration but it's likely that they will have to if the recycling rate doesn't improve very quickly. Addressed sacks for scanning and charges made if containing recyclables would make an immediate big difference, not to mention savings on the cost of scattering thousands of bins around all over the place. Has this really been thought through? We have an awful lot of rubbish and we aren't still living in the 70s. We have technology now so why is there all this messing about trying to save a bit more here and there? |
