The two observations I would make after the events of the last few weeks are: 1. The UK Parliament has done another poor job (all 3 parties being guilty) of enabling open debate on a major issue. Over the last six months it has not shown that it knows what the possible answers are to many crucial issues if a "Yes" vote occurs including oil, defence, tax, health services etc.. Their actions over the last week seem to show them all in "headless chicken" mode and devoid of any short or longer term strategy. If they do know the likely answers their unwillingness to openly debate reflects that they are not good news one fears. 2. The breaking of countries unions is not common but the most recent (Czech Republic and Slovakia) has cost the latter dearly and was driven by historical emotion not dissimilar to what we see here. The belated attempt to offer promises of a greater "Devo Max" model (rolling out Gordon Brown to present was a great own goal for Salmond) is the inverse of the Welsh prior vote on rejecting separation where they voted "No" but wanted Devo Max versus the then ruling status quo. Per my commenst under 1., no political party has it seems yet fully got its head around what this means and what it would look like |
