How do you define a "country" ? What is currently referred to as Scotland includes areas that were once part of England, Norway and Denmark. What is currently referred to as England includes formerly independent countries such as Mercia, Northumbria and Wessex. Scotland and England ceased to exist as separate countries in 1707 when the United Kingdom was created, just as Mercia and Northumbria ceased to exist as separate countries around eight hundred years earlier, and Wales ceased to exist as a separate country in 1284 (although that was not legally ratified until 1536). |
