The objections to the idea of the conservation area seem to be based on a misapprehension that the sub-standard buildings within the new area will be preserved in aspic. This isn't how it will work. There will be a huge amount of development over the next decade precisely because large stretches of this part of the High Road are sub-standard. The prices achieved for residential flats in less attractive areas of the High Road make this inevitable. A conservation area will allow some limited additional control of this massive change in the longer term. In the shorter term it will serve to protect the Packhorse and Talbot. |
