it is totally daft - it contains the 'newly' re-built (in an old style) corner of upham park road (old fruit and veg) then new Sainsburies, then a row of shops of NO merit - then the Metro bank (negative merit IMHO)Pack Horse - then 1960s hotch potch, another modern bank building, more uncharacteristic shops, betting shops, supermarkets, M&S and other tat. Conservation area - really? It is a bit too opportunist - and as far as I am aware they do not currently even have a conservation officer - she left a while ago and I think an advert has only recently been issued! Is the objective of a conservation strategy to keep that area of the High Street as it is - would we really want that! They are supposed to "ensure that new development will preserve or enhance these areas" but IMHO the area proposed long ago lost any character that can be summed up in a "Character Appraisal Statement" and define anything worth conserving!
