"an area of notable environmental or historical interest or importance which is protected by law against undesirable changes." Actually I think CHR does fit the bill on 'environmental importance' and the key phrase for me is 'undesirable changes' I am certainly not of the view that CHR should be preserved in aspic and I'm not really sure what the impact of a conservation area is. I know when I lived in one it restricted things like window replacement on Victorian houses but whether it has an impact, and what impact, on proposed redevelopments I don't know. The row of shops in front of Sainsbury's is within the proposed area and, as we know, is currently proposed for significant development: this is controversial but I doubt many would want to 'conserve' it as it is. Perhaps Adam can help with explaining what conservation area status would mean? |
