Personally, I accept all of what the most recent posts have said. However, perhaps the difficulty and delay of obtaining a listing, as opposed to a conservation area, is the problem (I have no expertise in this area, but got the impression from previous expert opinions that the former was more difficult to get than the latter). I agree that there are many buildings in the area of no great historical or architectural merit, and I also agree that the P&H is not on a par with, say, Westminster Abbey, but I still maintain that buildings like the P&H help to create the pleasant surroundings that make CHR popular with residents and visitors. As for the others (Sofa Workshop, etc), yes, they are fairly dull and uninteresting, but what would they be replaced with if the planners are given their head? 'Interesting' buildings like Metro bank and those modern blocks of flats that look as though they been constructed from an IKEA kit? I think many people who support the idea of a conservation area do so from the point of view of 'Better the devil you know...' |
