Marc, Sorry but I don't find your post remotely helpful or reasonable, this thread has actually been fairly well balanced, including my own contributions as both a cyclist and as a driver, criticising both other cyclists and drivers and openly acknowledging that I'm not whiter than white myself and have received penalty points once for speeding (and on one other occasion I avoided penalty points by going on a driver improvement course). I think it's plain silly to try to present the actions of some drivers as some kind of "justification" for some cyclists behaving the way they do, and vice versa. If I posted on here everytime I witnessed bad driving by a driver or bad cycling by a cyclist the number of posts would be higher for cyclists than for drivers, but nevertheless it would be far higher for both than it should be. If I had to start a post every time I feel 'threatened' or 'in danger' due to other road users as either a driver, cyclist or pedestrian then there wouldn't be many posts (although I'd actually say I feel more threatened by poor driving when I'm driving than when I'm cycling). In some way this brings me back to a point I raised on another recent thread when I said that one of the biggest problems I think is the emphasis on segregation between cyclists and car drivers, because often when cyclists used to being segregated from traffic have to cycle on the road they immediately feel vulnerable because of their own lack of familiarity/confidence at cycling on roads with other traffic, so they perceive danger/threats which don't really exist. And I write these posts as someone who's been cycling for longer than he's been driving (21 years driving, 25 years cycling in both country and city), including several years when I used to clock 200+ miles a week on the bike for training purposes (which sadly I don't have the time or energy to do now !). |
