All your messages and thoughts would be well received on the Outer Hebrides...North Scotland...where the vistas and landscapes on the Isle of Lewis are about to be scarred by some 300-400 giant windmills. Each windmill is apparently going to have 400 feet propellors..and will caused untold damage to wildlife and damage to the infrastructure as massive construction plant will be used. (the propellors will possibly be transported by the futuristic vehicle that moved Concorde from Heathrow to the river at Isleworth) The plans seem to be already in motion with construction firms like Amey already lined up for action. David Bellamy paid a visit to the Island to voice his concerns. But it seems that the Big Boys are steaming ahead..and ignoring the protests and complaint letters to the Hebridean Press. Whilst the Isle of Lewis is probably the most windy part of the UK, the 30,000 residents are not exactly happy about INCOMERS destroying their pastoral heritage....whether its for the "green cause" or not. The electricity generated would be cabled to the Mainland near Liverpool. The colossal expenditure on the project...would take many many years to be offset...by any economic benefit...if at all. Each windmill would only have a limited lifespan in that wind!! It really is windy windy up there...I've just returned. I look forward to reading the for/against opinions and arguments...from those better knowledge of the matter. |
