Thinking about it my comment was slightly out of place anyway - sorry.

Moving on I wonder if the problem is that Mr Theroux has not properly explored the conservation route. He says that the only way to get carbon emissions down in a decade is to go to nuclear fission power. In fact we could reduce emissions tomorrow by very simple economy measures.

IMO any sensible person who is given the direct choice of making savings in energy or having a nice shiny new nuclear station next door will immediately start unplugging the TV at night and putting a jumper on when they want to sit outdoors on a chilly evening. The question is why people won't do these things anyhow. Is it because they don't feel that they're given a choice so they might as well send the world to hell with everyone else?. What's happened to us? The Victorians were optimistic enough about the future to give us our housing, bridges, trains and sewers - we're so negative that we're happy to just pass on a pile of waste.

Some would say it's the nanny state removing our sense of responsibility - but surely a nanny would be making hard decisions for us as well?.

I think it's a lack of easy to understand information, abetted by a media that encourages controversy by giving unwonted exposure to maverick opinions, and an education system that is failing to equip people with the ability to penetrate the murk.

Nuclear fission is not the proper way out, it is an easy option that we must avoid.
