Asha, I think some of your alternatives info is out of date. Just one example - I'm sure you are aware that most of Iceland IS heated and powered by Geothermal energy, and you just think it can't be exploited in the UK. But it can. The Icelanders just pour water into a hole and get steam out - of course we can't do that but we CAN use heat pumps - a more sophisticated solution. These work like a refrigerator in reverse and can extract useful energy out of quite low grade heat. A trench in the garden is all that is required - the heat output is 3 to 4 times the power input. A quick search on the web will show several companies able to install this technology. Breeder reactors are popular in France but not elsewhere. The US doesn't like them because they produce more plutonium fuel than they consume which can then be used in nuclear weapons. Because they use liquid sodium coolant they are expensive to run and they will probably remain unpopular until the price of uranium increases. |
