Theroux spent about 10-15 mins (out of maybe 70) on conservation, covering the carbon output of everyday western life, and the kind of choices required to reduce it. He probably spent a similar time on renewable energy sources. He majored on 2 things; the scale and immediacy of the environmental problem facing us, and Chernobyl and its grim aftermath. I don't think it boils down to a choice between conservation or nuclear. It's both, and renewables where possible and appropriate. I agree that conservation is worthwhile and very important, and that somehow we have to do a lot more of it. It's a big problem though that there is no real incentive for conservation provided by the marketplace. I cannot see how conservation technniques can make more than a dent in our energy use. 10%? 20%? 30%? (a TV left on standby uses maybe 5W, and there aren't that many patio heaters around). And we're not going to control the burgeoning energy use of China or India. Or even the US! So global energy use is only going to increase I think. Which is why, much to my suprise, I concluded that Theroux was right. We need nuclear (fission) now. I just hope it can be replaced by fusion this century. |
