Not too sure about market forces here. The privatised generating industry has built gas fired stations presumably because they're the cheapest and easiest both to build and to operate - the fuel comes out of a pipe and the cost doesn't really matter, it's just passed on to the consumer. Nuclear power stations have to be much more expensive to build and to operate. Then there's the unknown costs of waste disposal (how's it going to be done?) and hard to predict decomissioning costs at the end of it all. If we are to go nuclear I think it would have to be driven by the government. |
