Well Brexit was an either/or referendum not a general election. Ironically the small boats issue is largely a consequence of Brexit. Not being in the EU means we cannot use the Dublin regulation to return asylum seekers to the EU. It also means an asylum seeker who has been refused asylum in the EU is no longer instantly refused here and can apply from scratch. Roughly half of small boat arrivals are in this category. https://www.durham.ac.uk/departments/academic/law/news-and-events/news/2023/february/new-report-on-small-boat-crossings-launched-by-professor-thom-brooks/ |
